The KMS Scholarship Fund

On August 12, 2012 our lives were changed forever with the tragic loss of Kristen S. Lartey, Genevieve Marie Phillip, and Sharrice M. Perkins. We honor them with The KMS Scholarship Fund, established to financially support the undergraduate studies of three motivated students who recognize the power of education and have the desire and the courage to grow.

Our goal is to annually award three John D. O’Bryant School seniors with college scholarships. Please support our efforts to honor our friends by making a donation today.

The KMS Scholarship Fund will award three $1000 scholarships annually:

Eligibility

Must be current, high school senior attending the John D. O’Bryant School of Science and Mathematics
Must have plans to attend a university, a four-year college, a two-year college, or a vocational-tech school in the fall following high school graduation
Must have financial need for the award

Interview with KMS Scholarship committee

The KMS Scholarship committee will make the final selection of each scholarship recipient. The disbursement will be made directly to the recipient and should be used for education purposes only (i.e tuition, books, laptops, room/board). The scholarship is non-renewable.

Attending Saint Joseph’s University
Major: Criminal Justice

Recipient of The Kristen S. Lartey Scholarship Award

“I intend to join the 4+1 program during my junior year in order to graduate with my Bachelor’s degree and major in Criminal Justice. Additionally, I hope to study abroad and have the opportunity to intern with the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, as well as the Victim Witness Services and Special Victims Unit. My biggest motivation is my mom. She has always been my biggest supporter and has encouraged me to pursue my dreams. Seeing her work hard and sacrifice for our family has inspired me to do the same and strive for success in all aspects of my life.”

Attending Simmons University
Major: Nursing

“This upcoming fall I will be attending Simmons University and I will be majoring in nursing as I hope to be a pediatric nurse. One of my biggest motivations is my mom, she always inspires me and motivates me to do and become better every single day.”

“I have big dreams of becoming a lawyer in the near future. I plan on getting my degree after my four years of college in international relations where I will have great insight when it comes to politics, foreign affairs, public policies etc. There’s many other things I can do with this degree such as being an interpreter, affairs manager, diplomatic agent, or even an international lawyer. I just know I want to help people and I want to change and be an inspiration to the world around me.”

“My hope for the next four years at St. John’s University is to perform research, learn more about adolescent brains and bring awareness to the struggles of mental health within children. I’ve noticed that often the importance of a child’s mental health is dismissed in society. I would like to see more of this in the Boston area, which has inspired me to one day establish a non-profit counseling service available for children throughout different neighborhoods in Boston.”

Kristen S. Lartey

Kristen was a beautiful, purposeful, and Godly woman. As a recent graduate of St. John’s University with passions for singing, writing and nail design, she was ready to live out her dreams. Kristen was active in her family church, always a source of love and fellowship she glorified Christ in all her pursuits.

Genevieve Marie Phillip

Genevieve, affectionately known as Marie, was a loving and nurturing mother. Marie was a fiercely independent leader and a trendsetter. Her interest in beauty and helping others look and feel their best led her to enroll in cosmetology school. Marie was a constant source of support and encouragement for her friends and family.

Sharrice M. Perkins

Sharrice was a full of life, creative, free-spirit with a bright smile. She had bold style, loved fashion, and was enrolled in college. Sharrice was a championship double dutch jumper, and through the sport became a coach and mentor to many. She was fearless, never afraid to open her own doors or create one when it didn’t exist.
